About the event

Join park staff on May 27 at 10:00 am, to listen to the illustrated children’s book The Bad Seed by Jory John (author) and Pete Oswald (illustrator). Participants will enjoy a charming and endearing story about a "bad" seed, learning about the power of positive change, managing emotions, and embracing differences. For a reminder of these important lessons, each participant will plant a seed to take home with them! Free and open to all ages, but recommended for ages 3–10. Registration is required for all participants and children must have a supervising adult(s).

The program will take place indoors in a climate-controlled building, followed by a quick tour of Oak View's gardens and a seed planting activity outdoors under a covered patio.

(Rescheduled) Moth Week Celebration at Sandy Pines Preserve

Due to a weather cancellation on July 24th, we've decided that every week is Moth Week at Sandy Pines Preserve. Join us at Sandy Pines on Saturday, August 1st from 8:00 pm—11:00 pm to take part in the fun! We will use a common method of surveying moths called light sheeting, which involves setting up a sheet in a natural area and shining a bright light on it to attract moths and other nocturnal insects. We'll monitor the sheet throughout the night and identify anything that lands. We'll meet in the Sandy Pines parking lot at 8:00 pm (7201 Doc Procter Rd, Wendell, NC 27591) and work adjacent to the parking lot and artificial wetland. What to bring: Light (headlamp or flashlight preferable), close-toed shoes, chair, snack, water, dark clothing What not to bring: Pets, bug spray (it's harmful to the insects we'll be working with) Final decisions regarding weather will be made by 2:30 pm on August 1st. Please reach out to Ashley Gagnon with any questions or accessibility considerations (ashley.gagnon@wake.gov, 919-208-8259). See you there! Schedule: Aug 1, 2026 Saturday from 8pm to 11pm Duration: 3 hours Ages: Age less than 200 yrs,
